1. W przypadku krótkich przymiotników, jednosylabowych dodajemu końcówkę -er w stopniu wyższym oraz -est w stopniu najwyższym.

2. W przypadku kiedy krótki przymiotnik (zwykle dwusylabowy) kończy się na literę -y, zamieniamy -y na -i po czym dodajemy końcówkę -er oraz -est.

3. Jeżeli krótki przymiotnik kończy się na literę -e, dodajemy końcówkę -er oraz -st.

4. W przypadku gdy mamy do czynienia z dłuższymi przymiotnikami (więcej niż dwie sylaby) dodajemy more(less) oraz most(least) przed długimi przymiotnikami.

5. Są również przymiotniki, które stopniują się nieregularnie.

6. Nigdy nie używaj jednocześnie słówka more/most z przymiotnikiem stopniowanym przez dodanie końcówki -er/-est, np. more bigger.


7. Niektóre przymiotniki nie podlegają stopniowaniu, na przykład: right, left, wrong, straight, perfect, unique, fatal, universal, dead, blind, final.
